My name is Fiona and I am 64 years old. I was born, and grew up, on Shakespear Rd Fleetwood. I worked in various factories in Fleetwood then in 1986 I got a job at Lakeland View where I worked for 21 years.
My grandparents also lived on my street and were profoundly Deaf so I was taught basic sign language to be able to communicate with them. I always promote British Sign Language and teach basic sign language and Deaf awareness in the local community.
I currently work at Blackpool & Fylde College where I am a Learning Support Worker where I have supported both Deaf and hearing students. I am also a committee member on the newly formed Royal British Legion branch in Fleetwood which is chaired by Jimi Kuruvakadua, a Fleetwood Town Councillor.
I have family members who have additional needs and, as the community have mentioned, I think it is important that we have a send provision in the town which can be accessed by pupils who struggle within a mainstream setting, so that they don’t have to travel long distances just to be educated.
I am passionate about promoting our town and I am looking forward to working with other Board members on the Pride of Fleetwood initiative.
Fleetwood has been awarded £20 million over the next decade as part of the UK Government’s 'Pride in Place' programme
and the Fleetwood community will decide how the money is spent to benefit our wonderful town.
PRIDE IN FLEETWOOD is supported by the UK Government, Lorraine Beavers MP for Blackpool North & Fleetwood and Wyre Council.
